Facts on Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy

One of the major problems of having an exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is the inability of your pancreas to function normally wherein it cannot properly absorb the nutrients from the food as well as digest the food because of the lack of enzyme production. That is why it is recommended that one should undergo a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy to help manage the condition and prevent any discomfort that it brings you.

Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, popularly known as PERT, is represented by capsules that are considered to be pancreatic enzyme supplements and its content is mixtures of digestive enzymes. Aside from that, it also contains lipase that is the one to break down fats, the amylase that digests carbohydrates and protease for the digestion of protein.

The intake of the PERT differs from one person to another but most people would follow the two capsule practices for every meal. There are a lot of factors to consider such as the residual function of the pancreas, the size and fats content of the food you’re going to eat and the ultimate goal of PERT for your health.

It is by far recommended by experts that PERT dosage must begin in a very low dose and the increase will depend if there is still a need for it. You might want to follow steps to make the treatment faster and effective.

Therefore, the first capsule should be taken together with your first bite and if you have multiple enzymes, the next must be taken at least midway of your meal. Put in mind that enzymes work well if they are being mixed with the food.

Next tip is to never take the medication with an empty stomach. Remember that the function of your pancreas to digest is being replaced by the supplement and that will help the enzyme work bests if you have eaten you meal.

Another tip is to not repeat a dose if you happen to skip a meal. The enzymes will function 60 minutes after you take them but if you have excessive doses, it might lead to side effects.

Another tip is to take the medication every meal and if you happen to skip a dose, do not take it twice on the next meal.

You must not chew the capsule rather swallow it whole. Never skip water on your meals. If you are fond of in between meals, it is best that you at least take half of the dose with that meal. Also, don’t forget to place the medication at room temperature to avoid damages of the medicine.

And lastly, make sure that you know your dosage for the medicine even if it will require you to see your doctor regularly.
